For millions of people, Lanka first enters the imagination through the Ramayana. Yet the island's relationship with India extends far beyond one epic: through the transmission of Buddhism, the journeys of monks and pilgrims, maritime trade, sacred architecture, royal patronage, Tamil and Sinhala traditions, and centuries of artistic and cultural exchange.

The Palk Strait is narrow, but the historical relationship across it is vast. People, beliefs, languages, goods, artistic forms and sacred traditions have moved between southern India and Sri Lanka over many centuries.
The Epic Connection
The Ramayana gave generations of Indians their earliest imaginative relationship with Lanka, while Sri Lankan landscapes developed their own local memories of the epic.
The Buddhist Connection
Sri Lankan tradition remembers the arrival of Buddhism during the Mauryan age through Mahinda, and the bringing of a branch of the Bodhi tree by Sanghamitta. Buddhism then developed in Sri Lanka with an institutional, artistic and textual life of exceptional importance.
The Maritime Connection
Ports and sea routes linked the island with the coasts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Odisha and wider Indian Ocean networks.
Temple & Artistic Connection
Hindu and Buddhist architecture, sculpture, ritual and royal cultures reveal interaction as well as distinctly Sri Lankan expression. Polonnaruwa, for example, preserves both Buddhist monuments and evidence of Chola-period presence.

A seven-day programme can provide a good introduction, but it will struggle to make the Ramayana the real centre while also doing justice to Buddhist heritage, culture and nature. The strongest flagship is therefore designed as 9 days / 8 nights, subject to ground validation.
Day 1 Crossing the Sea
Arrival, welcome, rest and an evening introduction to Lanka in the Indian imagination.
Day 2 Rama and Shiva Traditions
Selected western-coast Ramayana traditions such as Munneswaram and Manavari; continue toward the Cultural Triangle.
Day 3 Rock, Cave and Sacred Art
Dambulla and Sigiriya, with the relationship between kingship, landscape, Buddhist art and engineering.
Day 4 A Buddhist Royal Capital
Polonnaruwa, including Buddhist monuments, royal city, water systems and Chola-period traces.
Day 5 The Living Sacred City
Kandy, the Temple of the Tooth, city culture and Kandyan performance.
Day 6 Hanuman in the Highlands
Ramboda, Sri Bhakta Hanuman Temple, waterfalls, tea country and arrival in Nuwara Eliya.
Day 7 Sita's Landscape
Sita Amman Temple, Sita Eliya, Hakgala and selected nearby traditions such as Divurumpola, subject to timings.
Day 8 Ravana, Rock and Water
Ella landscape, Ravana Falls or another validated site; nature, food and a final interpretive session.
Day 9 Return and Reflection
Return toward Colombo/airport with a closing conversation; departure based on flight plan.
